KATHMANDU: Federation of Business and Professional Women Nepal (BPW Nepal) on Saturday organised 'Annual Candle Lighting Ceremony' in Kathmandu to mark the 93rd International BPW Day.

More than 60 members of BPW Nepal's various chapters inside and outside Kathmandu valley participated in the ceremony.

BPW Nepal was founded by Ambica Shrestha in Nepal in 1972. "In addition to the 93rd International BPW Day, we are commemorating 50 years of achievement in Nepal. Women from all businesses and professions have been its members internationally since it was founded in Nepal." BPW Nepal President Ambica Shrestha said and added, "Although we have carried out several social projects in various districts of Nepal, we never felt the need to contact mediapersons to get our work covered by the media. However, in order to spread the word about what we are doing, boost the potential, and produce greater results, I believe exposure is now required." Shrestha urged mediapersons present at the event to assist in communicating their message to the world.

The candle lighting ceremony took place in the presence of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-10 Ward Chairperson Ram Kumar KC, executive boards of BPW and guests representing various organisations. A total of 10 candles were lit, seven for the continents, one each for Lena Madesin Philips, International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW International), and the aspiring young members of BPW.

KMC-10 Ward Chairperson KC said he was thrilled to know about the work done by BPW Nepal. "It has already been 50 years and just now I am introduced to this organisation. I want to say that BPW is incredible, I will be more than happy to work in collaboration with BPW and encourage youths to take the lead for the future generation,” he said.

Addressing the event, Subarna Prajapati, Master of Ceremony, remarked, “A strong woman stands up for herself while a stronger woman stands up for others,”

BPW Nepal President Shrestha said, “We are all working women and we can be a member of BPW even when we earn as little as Rs 10 to feed ourselves." She stressed that each and every effort made by women should be recognised." She emphasized the importance of volunteering and opined that the current generation should try to understand the value of volunteering. A person should not look for tangible results in whatever he/she does, she suggested. "Every action we take should come from the heart. The sky is the limit.“

The event was held at the BPW Building, in Buddhanagar.
