KATHMANDU: Stakeholders and experts have called for collective efforts of the government and private sector to bring about reforms in the current economic situation of the country.
At a programme organised in Kathmandu on Friday on the occasion of the 27th annual general assembly of Society of Economic Journalists-Nepal (SEJON), speakers said that coordination and cooperation among all the agencies are required for the improvement of the country's economic condition.
Addressing the programme, Acting Prime Minister Purna Bahadur Khadka said that the Prime Minister has taken serious steps to better the country's economy and claimed that the economy will recover soon.
Khadka said the bank's interest rate has decreased, the stock market has improved and the real estate market has bounced back due to the government's positive intervention.
He, however, said that some interest groups are attempting to take advantage by showing the challenges of the economy.
Likewise, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari said that no entity can remain in isolation by pointing fingers at others regarding the challenging economic conditions. He added that only the monetary policy cannot ensure reforms in the economy.
The NRB Governor also urged the stakeholders to inform the central bank if any bank and financial institutions charge higher interest rates.
Speaking at the event, Nepal Bankers' Association President Sunil KC said the interest rate of the banks has decreased by one percentage point and the bank's base rate is limited to the single digit.
During the event, Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) President Rajesh Kumar Agrawal argued that the solution could be explored only if we admit the challenges of economy.
Similarly, Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) Chairman Ramesh Kumar Hamal said foreign investment is not sufficient in Nepal due to cumbersome processes in setting up enterprises. He added that Nepal should emphasize the promotion of small and medium-sized industries.
Dahal, Bhattarai receive this year's SEJON Award
KATHMANDU: This year's Society of Economic Journalists Nepal (SEJON) Award has been jointly presented to Matrika Dahal and Devendra Bhattarai of Kantipur Daily.
The award was jointly presented to Dahal and Bhattarai for their news related to fake Bhutanese refugees scam published in Kantipur Daily.
Similarly, Ramesh Kumar Neupane of Himal Khabar was honoured with Bhola Chalise Liberal Journalism Award. Likewise, SEJON Broadcast Award, SEJON Digital Media Award and SEJON Print Media Award were presented to Arjun Pokharel of Ujjyalo Radio, Rajesh Barma of Clickmandu and Muna Kunwar of Naya Patrika Daily respectively. Yagya Banjade of Kantipur Daily received 'Late Sanjay Neupane Research Grant.
An annual publication 'Arthaniti' was unveiled on the occasion of SEJON Day.
