WARSAW, POLAND: Twenty years after becoming a member of the European Union, Poland is still not prepared to adopt the euro currency, according to the finance minister in the pro-European Union government.

Andrzej Domański, the finance minister in Prime Minister Donald Tusk's Cabinet, stated in an interview on TVN24 on Monday that Poland's joining of the eurozone, the currency union of 20 EU members, is not justified at present.

He expressed his belief that having its own currency, the zloty, helped Poland avoid a recession during the global financial crisis and withstand other shocks.

On Wednesday, Poland and nine other countries will commemorate the 20th anniversary of their accession to the EU, which took place on May 1, 2004. As part of the membership terms, Poland committed to replacing the zloty with the single European currency.
