KATHMANDU: Chamber of Industries Morang (CIM) has urged the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to address daily electricity supply disruptions lasting between eight and 10 hours in Sunsari-Morang, Biratnagar-Rani, and Biratnagar-Katahari industrial corridors.

CIM stated that these unannounced power outages are severely affecting industries and businesses, forcing them to reduce production and suffer financial losses worth millions. The organisation called on the NEA to take the matter seriously and ensure reliable electricity supply.

CIM President Rakesh Surana expressed concern that, despite repeated requests, the regulatory body has yet to find a long-term solution to the issue. He criticised the NEA for failing to prioritise industry concerns, saying this indicates a lack of sensitivity towards the private sector.

Surana further said that businesses had expected the NEA’s new leadership to focus on stable electricity supply and quality improvement. However, he argued that the authority’s focus on profit and loss, without addressing these disruptions, has worsened challenges for industries.

He highlighted that businesses face double difficulties—higher electricity tariffs during the dry season and an unreliable power supply. He urged the NEA to recognise the negative impact of these outages on the industrial sector and take urgent steps to ensure a consistent supply while working towards a long-term solution.
