CHITWAN: The price of eggs has been increased.
Nepal Layers Poultry Breeders Association has fixed the support price to be implemented from today. Accordingly, the farm price in Chitwan has been set at Rs 480 per crate of large-size eggs and Rs 450 for medium-size eggs. This is an increase of Rs 30 per crate of 30 eggs.
Binod Pokharel, president of the association, said the rise was due to low production and high demand. Four months ago, 40,000 cartons of eggs were produced daily, but production has now dropped to 28,000 to 30,000 cartons.
According to Dr Ananta Dahal, associate professor at the Agriculture and Forestry University, Rampur, egg production has decreased because higher temperatures prompt egg-laying chickens to eat less feed. Production has fallen by about 25%.
Furthermore, diseases are common at this time of year and, when humidity increases due to rain, heat stress on chickens intensifies, further reducing output.
Meanwhile, Dr Bijay Kumar Shrestha, head of the National Avian Disease Investigation Laboratory Chitwan, Bharatpur, said samples from Chitwan and surrounding districts have tested positive for H9 (or H9N2) in 50 poultry farms.
