
KATHMANDU: On the late Madan Bhandari’s 74th birthday, the Madan Bhandari Foundation organised “Three Decades of Multiparty Democracy” on June 28.

The Chief Guest, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was joined by Chairperson of the Madan Bhandari Foundation, Usha Kiran Bhandari; former President Bidhya Devi Bhandari; and senior Vice President of the CPN-UML party Ishwor Pokharel. Chairperson Bhandari reiterated the Foundation’s commitment to develop an educated population by providing scholarships to Masters and PhD students at Tribhuvan University.

The Madan Bhandari National Award was presented to Ang Tsering Sherpa, founder of Asian Trekking. Sherpa is an advocate for climate change and environmental conservation and an inciter of the Everest Cleanup Campaign in 2009. He received NRs 100,000 from the Foundation.

At the event, former President Bhandari announced her intent to return to party politics after renewing her membership with the CPN-UML party.

The Madan Bhandari Foundation reached 26 years this year, founded after Madan Bhandari died with Jibraj Ashrit in a road accident.
