CANBERRA: Electric vehicle sales in Australia rose by over 60% to a record high in the second quarter of 2025, according to official data.

In a report published on Thursday, the peak motoring NGO, the Australian Automobile Association (AAA), revealed that Australians purchased 29,244 new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the three months between April and June.

It marks an increase of 63.3% from the 17,901 new BEV sales registered in the preceding quarter and a new record-high for quarterly sales, surpassing the previous record of 25,696 sales in the second quarter of 2023.

The AAA said that the new light vehicle market share for BEVs was 9.3% in the second quarter of 2025, up from 6.2% in the first quarter of the year and another new record high.

Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles' market share continued a steady decline from 86.4% in the first quarter of 2023 to 72.03% in the second quarter of 2025.

Hybrids accounted for 14.8% of all new light vehicle sales in Q2, the lowest market share since the first quarter of 2024.

Medium cars were the only market segment where both BEVs and hybrids had a greater market share than ICE vehicles.
