KATHMANDU: The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) Parliamentarians’ Meet 2025 kicked off in Kathmandu today.
The two-day conference seeks to foster common understandings, dialogue and coordination among parliamentarians from the HKH region.
Technically assisted by ICIMOD, it will be attended by representatives from Nepal, India, China, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar and Pakistan.
Around 30 participants – including parliamentarians, committee chairs and experts on climate change, air pollution and environmental issues – will take part. Representatives of partner organisations, experts from Nepal’s Federal Parliament and relevant government officials will also attend.
The meet is organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Forests and Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Delegates will discuss climate change in the Hindu Kush region, its impacts on the environment and biodiversity, and disaster risks and challenges.
“The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region is increasingly facing severe impacts of climate change, disaster risks, biodiversity loss and pollution alongside accelerated socio-economic shifts with serious implications for ecosystems, natural resources, livelihoods and human life,” ICIMOD states on its official website. “Given the significant role of parliamentarians in policy-making, legislation and shaping public opinion, parliamentarians from the HKH countries can be crucial in advancing the region’s climate action and resilience agenda.”
