KATHMANDU: Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) has called on the government to begin urgent repairs to Rasuwa and Tatopani border checkpoints, which have been blocked by heavy rain and flooding since last July.

With the closures coinciding with the main festive season, the NCC warns of serious disruption to trade, business and the import and export of goods, and has urged reconstruction to begin without delay.

According to a press statement issued by the NCC, the matter has been referred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies amid concerns that the prolonged closure will drive up prices and increase the risk of shortages of daily consumer goods and clothing.

"Major festivals such as Dashain, Tihar and Chhath are approaching," the statement said. "Imports have been directly affected, as reconstruction of the blocked Tatopani and Rasuwa checkpoints has not been completed on time, and this could place an additional financial burden on consumers."

The NCC added that extended closure of critical checkpoints with China not only hampers foreign trade but also undermines small industries and local business establishments.
