KATHMANDU: India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated SEMICON India 2025 at Yashobhoomi (India International Convention and Expo Centre) in New Delhi today, ANI reported.
The event, running from September 2 to 4, opened to an overwhelming response, registering over 20,000 participants with delegates from 48 countries, more than 50 CXOs and 1,275 booths – the country’s largest semiconductors and electronics show.
Addressing attendees following visits to Japan and China, Modi said, “The day is not far when the world will say – designed in India, made in India, trusted by the world.” He added, “The world trusts India, the world believes in India, and the world is ready to build the semiconductor future with India.” Drawing an analogy, he remarked that “oil was black gold, but chips are digital diamonds.”

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “This is a year in which many dreams are coming true. On September 2, the Prime Minister was presented with the first made-in-India chip manufactured by CG SEMI. Three more pilot lines will be almost complete in the next few months. We also presented 20 chips designed by students and manufactured at our SCL Mohali facility. The flagship event witnessed the convergence of all critical stakeholders of the semiconductor ecosystem, including equipment, chemical, gas and material manufacturers, showing the scale at which we are growing and the confidence the world has in India’s semiconductor journey.”
Ajit Manocha, President and CEO of SEMI, was quoted in ANI as saying, “The Indian semiconductor industry is experiencing exponential growth, in line with ‘Modi’s law’, which envisions India replicating Moore’s Law for industry expansion. With technology at an inflection point backed by AI, we are at the cusp of unprecedented dynamics in the current geopolitical landscape. India is being recognised globally for its remarkable potential and growing leadership in the sector.”
Ashok Chandak, President of SEMI India and IESA, announced the signing of 12 memoranda of understanding at the event. He said, “Prime Minister Modi’s vision, as articulated at SEMICON India 2024, is becoming a reality, pointing to initiatives such as the passive component manufacturing scheme and the Research, Development and Innovation Scheme. This year’s show surpassed expectations with nearly 1,275 booths – a significant rise from 650 last year – and more than 20,000 registrations, underscoring India’s growing prominence in the semiconductor landscape.”
The newly formed India Deep Tech Investment Alliance (IDTA) pledged $1 billion to spur private investment in priority deep-tech sectors and accelerate entrepreneurship across the India–US corridor. Founding members include Celesta Capital, Accel, Blume Ventures, Gaja Capital, Ideaspring Capital, Premji Invest, Tenacity Ventures and Venture Catalysts.
The inauguration was attended by Ashwini Vaishnaw; Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for MeitY; Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister of the National Capital Territory of Delhi; Mohan Charan Majhi, Chief Minister of Odisha; and S. Krishnan, Secretary at MeitY, alongside global leaders and CXOs. Vaishnaw presented the Vikram 32-bit processor, the first made-in-India semiconductor chip, to Modi in the presence of over 4,000 delegates.
Under the theme Building the Next Semiconductor Powerhouse, SEMICON India 2025 has taken centre stage as South Asia’s largest platform for showcasing the latest advancements in the semiconductors and electronics industries. The event convened industry leaders, innovators, policymakers, start-ups, researchers and academicians for international roundtables, keynote speeches, panel discussions and fireside chats on fabs, advanced packaging, smart manufacturing, AI, supply-chain management and sustainability.
Industry representatives from Applied Materials, ASML, IBM, Infineon, KLA, Lam Research, Merck, Micron, PSMC, Rapidus, SanDisk, Siemens, SK Hynix, Tata Electronics and Tokyo Electron were among those in attendance.
