KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Urban Development is to prepare, within three days, a detailed report on losses to physical structures, vehicles and other items caused by arson and vandalism during the recent Gen-Z protests.
At a meeting coordinated by Ministry Secretary Gopal Prasad Sigdel today, officials decided to gather full details of the damage sustained during the protest on September 9.
Narayan Prasad Mainali, the ministry’s spokesperson, said 50 ministry vehicles were destroyed by fire, some were vandalised, and various items, including computers, were stolen. He added that work to compile the losses was underway.
“Although most of the buildings in Singha Durbar have been destroyed by fire, the Ministry of Urban Development has been spared, but various assets here have been looted. Vehicles have been destroyed by fire, and we have come to the office on foot,” he said. “The ministry will compile a damage report within three days. We are also preparing how to move forward by transforming mourning into strength in the coming days.”
According to Secretary Sigdel, about 60% of the Urban Development and Building Construction Department’s premises under the ministry have been burnt. He said there is uncertainty about where work will continue going forward.
“We will gather information on the extent of damage to the buildings constructed by the ministry, including the minister’s official quarters. Today, we discussed how to move forward and carried out cleaning,” he added.
