KATHMANDU: Newly appointed Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Anil Kumar Sinha has signed a decision to advance the process of amending the land use regulations.

Taking office at the ministry in Singha Durbar today, Minister Sinha said that although much has been done on land reform, development-related work has been affected by the prohibition on land fragmentation (kittakat), and the amendment has been proposed to facilitate development.

Minister Sinha said it is necessary to amend the Land Use Act and regulations by prioritising issues such as the prohibition on land fragmentation, land acquisition for development projects, and the protection and proper utilisation of agricultural land.

The minister said the authority given to local levels is insufficient and that necessary facilitation should come from the centre, adding that land management should be undertaken in a scientific and objective manner with the country and its people at the centre.

On his assumption of office, secretary and senior officials welcomed Minister Sinha and briefed him on the ministry’s current status, work plan and priorities.
