Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Executive Director Manoj Silwal has announced that Nepal is exporting an average of 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity daily while also meeting domestic demand.
Since the start of the fiscal year 2025/26, the country has exported electricity worth approximately Rs 15 billion. The surplus power is being sold to India’s Haryana and Bihar through the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) in both day-ahead and real-time markets, and under a bilateral mid-term agreement. Additionally, 40 MW is exported daily to Bangladesh using India’s transmission infrastructure.
Electricity exports to India are settled in Indian Rupees (INR), while trade with Bangladesh is conducted in US dollars, generating revenue in both currencies. Nepal currently has approval to export up to 1,165 MW of electricity to India and Bangladesh combined.
