BHAKTAPUR: The Nepal Sambat calendar date will now be printed on Nepali banknotes, starting this year.
The announcement was made by Shankhadhar Sakhwa Pratishthan during a press conference in Bhaktapur. A formal declaration will be made on Wednesday, 22 October, during a wreath-laying ceremony at the statue of national luminary Shankhadhar Sakhwa by Prime Minister Sushila Karki, marking the Nepal Sambat 1146 New Year.
Chairman Gyanram Shrestha stated that the decision follows discussions with the Prime Minister, adding, “Nepal Sambat is a national calendar, not limited to the Newar community.” Preparations for the event have been finalised, according to former chairman Shyam Krishna Manandhar.
The move is seen as a symbolic recognition of Nepal’s cultural heritage and identity.
