COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development has launched the National Industry Information System (NIIS), a new digital platform designed to consolidate and manage information on the country's industrial and economic activities.
The NIIS, launched on Wednesday, serves as a centralised database encompassing industry details, business classifications, legal status, registration data, UN classification, scale of operations, production statistics, raw material use, market coverage, employment, energy and fuel consumption, and waste management and disposal methods.
Under the initiative, industrialists can register by creating individual accounts or by submitting details through authorised government officers. Applications will be reviewed and verified by officials, who may also conduct site inspections where necessary.
Each verified entity will receive an official certificate recognising it as a registered industry within the National Industry Database. Registered industries are required to update their data annually to maintain the accuracy and reliability of the system.
Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunnetti said the launch marks an important step in the digitalisation of Sri Lanka's industrial sector, noting that no comprehensive database of local industries existed until now.
