Thimphu: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Bhutan’s former King, Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and jointly inaugurated the Kalachakra Empowerment ceremony in Thimphu on Wednesday, highlighting the strong spiritual and cultural bonds between India and Bhutan.
The three-day Kalachakra ceremony, part of the Global Peace Prayer Festival 2025, confers blessings and authorisations for advanced meditative practices and is presided over by Je Khenpo, Bhutan’s senior religious hierarch. The festival brings together Buddhist leaders and practitioners from across the Asia-Pacific region.
During his visit from 11 to 12 November, PM Modi also met Bhutan’s current King, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, to discuss energy, defence, technology, connectivity, and capacity-building. He inaugurated the Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project, called an “enduring symbol” of India-Bhutan friendship, and announced a new immigration checkpoint in Hatisar to streamline cross-border movement.
India also extended a line of credit of Rs 4,000 crore to Bhutan and facilitated the signing of three MoUs to further bilateral development cooperation.
The festival and empowerment ceremony underscore the shared commitment of both countries to spiritual collaboration, sustainable development, and regional partnership.
