KATHMANDU: Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and the University of Nepal (UoN) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on development and research in Nepal’s education sector.

The MoU was signed on Wednesday at the FNCCI Secretariat by FNCCI President Chandra Prasad Dhakal and UoN Registrar Dr Surya Raj Acharya. It is valid for five years and covers curriculum development, joint research and innovation, entrepreneurship development, and the creation of internships and employment opportunities for students.

Speaking after the signing, FNCCI President Dhakal said the agreement would help produce skilled manpower within the country amid migration of young workers abroad. “This collaboration will be fruitful in producing skilled manpower desired by industries and businesses and in providing employment opportunities to youths. We are positive regarding such collaboration in the coming days as well,” he said.

UoN Chancellor Dr Bindu Nath Lohani said the partnership would help connect Nepal’s education system with the global market. “Our goal is to provide students with not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills and the spirit of entrepreneurship. We believe that the collaboration with FNCCI will make a significant contribution to achieving that goal,” he said.

UoN Vice Chancellor and Chairperson Dr Arjun Karki said producing skilled, capable and quality manpower is the main objective of UoN and that the collaboration with FNCCI would support that aim. Likewise, Registrar Dr Surya Raj Acharya added that UoN seeks to produce manpower aligned with the needs of society and the labour market, noting that older universities had been unable to meet those changing demands.

The two organisations held a preliminary discussion on May 30 covering practical knowledge, skill development and employment opportunities for students, and ways to produce skilled manpower tailored to industry needs.
