PATAN, LALITPUR: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation; Physical Infrastructure and Transport; and Urban Development, Kul Man Ghising, has stated that poor management of the contracting system for development and construction is harming the country’s economy and employment.
Speaking at a dialogue on the management of sick contracts organised by the Society of Infrastructure Journalists Nepal (SIJ‑Nepal) in Lalitpur on Monday, Minister Ghising said taking government contracts and failing to complete work on time causes losses to the country and to the people themselves.
"Problems have arisen in development and construction when work is not done according to the contract; Nepal's law does not allow any work to be done without a contract, and the lack of contract management affects employment and the economy as well," Minister Ghising said.
He emphasised that action must also be taken against those who do not make payments on time and who fail to make decisions after a contract is completed. Minister Ghising said the situation in Nepal calls for holding a conference of contractors rather than an investment summit.
At the start of the dialogue, infrastructure expert and former secretary Arjun Jung Thapa gave a presentation on the government's policy of terminating contracts and its impact.
