Kathmandu: The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection inspected 26 businesses in a single day to prevent illegal market practices and protect consumers ahead of the upcoming elections.

The Department said it has intensified checks on food and fruit traders after receiving complaints about hoarding, black marketing, and sudden price increases under the pretext of the elections. Traders have been warned to fully comply with existing laws.

On Monday, officials inspected shops in the Kuleshwor area. One firm, Ramesh Fruit Traders, was asked to submit its business documents within three days due to observed irregularities. The other 25 firms were given corrective instructions to follow the rules.

The Department added that these inspections are carried out in collaboration with local representatives, consumer activists, and other stakeholders to ensure transparency, maintain fair pricing, and protect consumers during the election period.
