BARCELONA: OPPO and MediaTek showcased a suite of new on-device artificial intelligence features and a joint roadmap for AI phones at MediaTek’s “AI for Life” keynote during Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 in Barcelona on Wednesday.
Jason Liao, President of OPPO Research Institute, said the companies’ deep collaboration is speeding up the deployment of AI on smartphones. “On-device Compute is a cornerstone of OPPO’s AI strategy, making AI a perceptible, real-time experience integrated into everyday use,” he said, outlining OPPO’s strategy of “New Computing, New Perception, and New Ecosystem.”
The partners demonstrated on-device versions of Translate and Portrait Glow powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 platform. OPPO said the on-device Translate runs without network access, delivers more stable output under weak signal conditions and achieves about a 15% improvement in accuracy over conventional approaches. On-device Portrait Glow, OPPO added, reconstructs scene illumination to improve portraits taken in dim or backlit environments while preserving natural rendering.
MediaTek and OPPO also presented a technology preview of Omni, described as the industry’s first on-device full-modal AI model for multi-modal understanding and interaction. Omni is designed to accept voice, video and text inputs and to enable live scene understanding and interactive Q&A directly on a handset, strengthening a phone’s ability to perceive and interpret the physical world without relying on cloud processing.
At MediaTek’s booth, attendees could try the Find X9 Pro’s on-device AI features alongside telephoto imaging with an OPPO Hasselblad Teleconverter. OPPO also highlighted creative AI imaging tools on the Reno15 Pro, including AI Motion Photo Eraser, AI Motion Photo Popout and AI Flash Photography.
OPPO said the on-device features will roll out to the Find X9 Series via an upcoming ColorOS 16 update. The company also announced that Android Quick Share — developed in collaboration with MediaTek and Google — will allow users to transfer files securely between OPPO phones and iOS, iPadOS and macOS devices without third-party apps; the feature is slated to begin rolling out in March via a software update.
The Find X9 Pro was shortlisted for the “Best Smartphone” GLOMO Award at MWC, a recognition OPPO said reflects its work on performance, imaging and AI integration. OPPO and MediaTek said they will continue to deepen cooperation on on-device AI and cross-ecosystem interoperability to bring more powerful, privacy-preserving AI experiences to users worldwide.
