JALESHWAR, MAHOTTARI: Construction work on the East-West Railway has halted in Bardibas Municipality after 14 people blocked the site over unpaid compensation.

The railway is being extended from Jayanagar in India to the station in Bhangaha Municipality in Mahottari district with assistance from the Indian government, but work on the Bhangaha-Bardibas section has been suspended owing to non-payment of compensation.

Fourteen people are yet to be paid compensation totalling around Rs 80 million. The Department of Railways has said it has requested the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport to disburse the amount.

The claimants of Bardibas have repeatedly approached the Department of Railways for compensation, but having not received payment, they have obstructed the construction of the railway track in Bardibas.
