KATHMANDU: Traffic police have taken action against 175 drivers of various ride-hailing services under a special checking campaign, Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office said.
The campaign was launched in the wake of rising traffic congestion and unruly driving. The office said it conducted special checks, especially on busy roads, and that drivers of ride-hailing services were found violating traffic rules; they were penalised, according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Naresh Raj Subedi.
Many drivers did not observe speed limits, operated illegally by running vehicles without using the online platform, carried out random pick-ups and drop-offs, ignored technical maintenance of vehicles, and even drove without carrying necessary documents such as a licence.
Random parking at busy road intersections and in hospital and school areas was also found during the checks, the office added. Companies running ride-sharing services have been urged to ensure strict monitoring of their drivers.
Pathao, inDrive and Yango are some of the popular ride-hailing services in Nepal. Both two-wheelers and taxis provide services aligned with these companies.
