KATHMANDU: Department of Immigration has reminded stakeholders that trekking guides are required for travelling to restricted areas in 13 districts across the country.
The Department said prior approval from the Department is needed for trekking in those areas. It has also stated that the issuance of trekking permits for foreigners travelling in groups through agencies in the restricted areas was made prompt, efficient and user-friendly through the online system.
The Department's spokesperson and director, Tikaram Dhakal, said contact numbers have been arranged to assist service-seekers with technical issues when applying for trekking permits. The Department has also decided to issue trekking permits to individual trekkers wishing to go to the restricted areas.
Applications should be filed through an agency to receive approval for trekking, and a trekking guide must be assigned; the concerned agency is required to take full responsibility for rescue operations in the event of an emergency.
The Department said a trekking guide may lead up to seven trekkers per group and that approval will be granted accordingly. Foreign nationals going on treks may also apply for permits from their own country by using their visa application number.
The Department stated that the provision would contribute to the promotion of the country's tourism, the creation of employment, the safety and security of trekkers and the facilitation of trekking.
