KATHMANDU: A Good Governance Unit has been established in the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation to make the Ministry's operations faster, more transparent and more result-oriented.

The Unit has been set up in accordance with the Good Governance (Management and Operation) Act 2064 BS, relevant regulations and a recent cabinet decision.

Formed at the directive of Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, the Unit will regularly track and evaluate the performance of staff across the Ministry and its subordinate bodies.

According to the minister's secretariat, the joint secretary of the Administration Division will serve as the Unit's coordinator. Deputy Secretary of the Information and Public Relations Division will act as the Unit's member secretary, the secretariat stated. Other members include joint secretaries from divisions handling programmes, budgets, monitoring, water resources, energy, development assistance, provincial coordination, meteorology and legal affairs.

The Unit will focus on ensuring that tasks assigned under the ministry's ‘Service-Oriented Governance System’ are completed within the stipulated timeframe, that officials fulfil their responsibilities effectively and that performance indicators are properly implemented. Additionally, the Unit will evaluate progress on employee responsibilities, adherence to legal deadlines and the efficient use of government resources.

The ministry has expressed confidence that this initiative will foster accountability, improve work culture and strengthen good governance throughout the organisation.
