KATHMANDU: Leader of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) parliamentary party, Gyan Bahadur Shahi, has urged the government to be accountable to the people and to implement the rule of law effectively.
Speaking in the first session of the House of Representatives today, he called on the government to steer the nation towards prosperity and to establish responsibility to the public. He emphasised the need to establish the facts behind incidents during the Gen Z uprising on September 8 and 9.
Shahi said governance must be based on democratic values and principles and that public hope and trust should be strengthened, not allowed to fade. He argued that, despite many political changes, the people’s situation has not improved as expected and called for all corruption-related files to be opened.
He urged that government work reflect recent party and generational changes in Nepali politics and demanded timely justice for victims of cases such as the Nirmala Pant and Inisha BK killings. He also highlighted the need to create employment opportunities for youth and called on all parties to unite to ensure good governance and the rule of law.
Shahi demanded that citizenship be granted to members of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) and stressed the need to prioritise development in Karnali province, which lags behind other provinces.
Independent MP Mahabir Pun has emphasised the need to free universities from political meddling. He said the 18 currently operating universities should be kept free of political influence and that priority should be given to promoting science and technology and creating domestic employment for young people.
Pun called for changes to education regulations to correct distortions in school education and expressed concern about growing political influence in school management committees. He also urged an end to political interference in the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT).
