JAKARTA: Indonesia has been preparing 39 new airport sites across the country to boost air connectivity, local media reported on Wednesday.

Lukman F Laisa, director general of civil aviation at the Ministry of Transportation, said the expansion plan aims to strengthen connectivity, expand access to remote areas and promote more balanced economic development across the archipelago.

The plan will boost Indonesia's total planned aviation network to 296 hubs, building on the 257 operational airports currently scattered across the archipelago.

According to Lukman, the new airports will prioritise safety, advanced technology utilisation and resilience against climate change.
