Mongolia's former PM Zandanshatar calls on education minister to promote chess in schools

KATHMANDU: Former Mongolian prime minister and president of the Mongolian Chess Federation, Gombojavyn Zandanshatar, held a courtesy meeting with Nepal’s Minister for Education and Sports, Sasmit Pokharel, at the ministry in Singha Durbar on Monday.

The two officials discussed strengthening bilateral relations, shared interests and multidimensional cooperation, and recalled diplomatic ties between Nepal and Mongolia. They noted similarities in geography and culture and agreed there is potential for closer collaboration.

Talks focused on promoting chess in school education and possible future cooperation between the two countries. Minister Pokharel said Nepal is moving towards integrating sports into school curricula and expressed interest in working with the Mongolian government and the Mongolian Chess Federation on related initiatives.

Zandanshatar highlighted Mongolia’s experience of integrating chess into school education and said chess serves as an educational tool that helps students develop critical thinking, decision‑making and independent choices. He said Mongolia is ready to collaborate with Nepal’s Ministry of Education and Sports and to support the Nepal Chess Federation in connecting chess with school education.
