KATHMANDU: Heavy rainfall has caused widespread landslides and road blockages across several districts, severely disrupting traffic, police said.

As of 6:00 am on Monday, major highways and road sections in Kavre, Sindhupalchok, Ilam, Rasuwa, Rukum West and Lamjung were affected, the police reported. The BP Highway in Kavrepalanchok was completely obstructed by a landslide early on Monday.

To reduce flood risks, vehicular movement on the BP Highway is restricted from 6:00 pm to 4:00 am, with traffic allowed only during daytime. The Mechi Highway is entirely blocked in Ilam Municipality by mudslides, and travellers have been advised to use alternative routes.

The Araniko Highway has suffered multiple blockages from landslides in Sindhupalchok, disrupting transport services in several rural municipalities. The Trishuli–Meilung–Syafrubesi road in Rasuwa is impassable due to river erosion.

In Rukum West, landslides have blocked the Jajarkot–Dolpa section of the Bheri Corridor, while Lamjung’s Mid Hill Highway is also obstructed. Local authorities and road crews are working to clear debris and restore traffic flow.

Citing the risk of further landslides and flooding from ongoing rainfall, police have urged the public to exercise caution when travelling.
