Geological study planned for landslide-hit areas in western Nepal

KATHMANDU: The government is set to carry out a geological study of landslide-affected areas in the western region, officials said on Sunday.

A meeting of the Monsoon Response Command Post of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) decided to conduct a preliminary geological survey in Thawang and Sunchhahari rural municipalities in Rolpa, Triveni Municipality in Bajura and Bheri Municipality in Jajarkot district.

The command post ordered a study team to be deployed in the field within three days under NDRRMA leadership, with representatives from the relevant agencies and participation from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

Officials instructed agencies to intensify search, rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations after monsoon-related disasters caused widespread damage in several districts. The NDRRMA expressed concern over the losses and called for an immediate acceleration of rescue and relief efforts targeting affected households.

The meeting asked district administration offices, district disaster management committees and local authorities to ensure injured people receive free medical treatment and to distribute relief materials to affected families following rapid assessments.

The NDRRMA directed the construction of temporary housing for those displaced, the initiation of retrofitting for private houses, and the provision of grants for reconstruction and rehabilitation at the earliest opportunity.

Residents were urged to remain on high alert during the monsoon season as torrential rain has increased the risk of landslides in hilly and mountainous areas. Locals were advised to avoid non-essential travel because the threat of inundation, flooding, flash floods and debris flows remains high across parts of the country.
