Rain-triggered floods, landslides halt traffic on different road sections across country

KATHMANDU: Heavy rain has caused flooding, landslides, debris deposition and river erosion, obstructing roads in several parts of the country.

As of 10:00 am today, road sections in Kavrepalanchok, Sindhuli, Makawanpur, Nuwakot, Ilam, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa and Rukum West were affected, according to Nepal Police.

Vehicular movement on the BP Highway through Kavrepalanchok via Khurkot–Nepalthok–Katunje Besi–Sindhuli has been suspended from 6:00 pm to 4:00 am because of the risk of flooding. Vehicles are permitted between 4:00 am and 6:00 pm.

All types of vehicles are prohibited on the Kanti Highway in Makawanpur from 5:00 pm to 5:00 am due to the rain. Movement of public and private vehicles, except those providing essential services, has been banned on the Tokha–Chhahare road section in Nuwakot from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am.

The Mechi Highway at Rajduwali in Ilam Municipality-9 is completely blocked after heavy rain left the road muddy, though an alternative route is available at the site. The Araniko Highway at Liping Bazaar, Bhotechaur-2 in Sindhupalchok was fully blocked Last Friday after a landslide deposited debris and stones from the Khahare River.

The Trishuli–Mailung–Syafrubesi section at Khalte in Uttar Gaya Rural Municipality–5 of Rasuwa district has been cut off after the Trishuli River eroded the road from below. In Rukum West, the Jajarkot–Dolpa section of the Bheri Corridor in Aathbiskot Municipality-6, Rijegad Khola, is completely blocked after stones and soil mixed with debris fell onto the carriageway.

Nepal Police has urged travellers to take precautions when using these routes, warning that the risk of further blockages is increasing while the rain continues.
