Death toll from Bhotekoshi flood reaches 95; 20 security personnel go missing

KATHMANDU: At least 95 people have been confirmed dead following a devastating flash flood that struck Rasuwa district on Wednesday morning, according to data released by Nepal Police.

The recorded fatalities comprise 37 men, 27 women, six girls and five boys, alongside 20 unidentified bodies.

Bodies were recovered across several districts downriver. Chitwan recorded the highest number of recoveries with 33 bodies, consisting of 10 men, 10 women, three girls, two boys and eight unidentified persons. In Dhading, rescue workers retrieved 18 bodies, including 11 women, five men and two unidentified individuals.

Gorkha reported 16 fatalities, comprising four men, one woman, one boy and 10 unidentified bodies. Nawalparasi retrieved 11 bodies, consisting of eight men and three girls, while Nuwakot recorded 11 fatalities, including six men and five women. In Tanahu district, five bodies were recovered, including three men, one boy and one girl. A single male body was retrieved in Rasuwa district.

Emergency operations have airlifted 63 survivors to safety. These individuals are currently undergoing medical treatment at various health facilities in Kathmandu.

Nepal Police also confirmed that 20 of its officers remain missing following the deluge. The missing personnel include 10 officers from Timure, five from Mailung, three from Rasuwagadhi and one each from Betrabati and Haku.
