Bhotekoshi flash flood: 199 unrecognisable bodies buried in Chitwan

CHITWAN: A total of 199 unrecognisable bodies recovered following a catastrophic flash flood that swept through Rasuwa district on August 26 have been buried in Chitwan after authorities secured their DNA samples.

The bodies were interred last night at the Devghat forest area in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-1. The burials were carried out in accordance with the Guideline on Management of Unidentified and Unclaimed Dead Bodies (First Amendment), 2083 BS.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Rameshwor Paudel, chief of District Police Office, Chitwan, said 272 bodies were recovered in the district in total; of those, 199 unrecognisable bodies were buried and 12 were identified.

Of the 272 recovered remains, 110 were men, 62 were women, seven were baby boys and six were baby girls, alongside 87 partial mortal remains.

DNA samples and identifying marks have been preserved, and relatives have received the bodies of those successfully identified. Under the provisions of the guideline, if legal heirs are identified in the future through DNA matching, the interred bodies or organs will be exhumed and handed over to families for final rites.
