Landslides, floods block major highways across Kathmandu Valley, Bagmati Province

KATHMANDU: Landslides and flooding caused by persistent rainfall have fully or partially blocked several major highways across the Kathmandu Valley and Bagmati Province, Nepal Police said.

The Prithvi Highway is completely blocked following a landslide at Krishnabhir in Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality-7, Dhading district. Small vehicles are able to use a single lane at Parewa Bhir in Gajuri Rural Municipality-2, while one-way traffic is in effect at Jawangkhola and Kamerebhir.

Time restrictions have been imposed on the Kavre section of the BP Highway due to flood risks. Cargo vehicles weighing up to 10 tonnes will be permitted to operate between 7:00 pm and 5:00 am; daytime movement will be allowed only after road conditions are assessed.

Traffic has been halted after floodwaters damaged the road at Khalte in Uttargaya Rural Municipality-5 on the Trishuli–Mailung–Syafrubesi route in Rasuwa. Other major roads in Rasuwa remain closed until further notice.

Vehicular movement is banned from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am at Ghattekhola on the Tokha–Chhahare road in Nuwakot owing to landslide risks. The Pasang Lhamu road section at Simtar is also completely closed.

One-way traffic has resumed on the Kathmandu–Dhading road following the removal of landslide debris at Chisapani in Chandragiri Municipality-2.

Police have urged the public to avoid travel unless essential and to contact the traffic police or the relevant district police control room for up-to-date road information before undertaking long-distance journeys. Bulldozers and technical teams have been mobilised to clear the blocked sections.
