Bhotekoshi floods: 1,399 bodies recovered, 4,089 reported missing

KATHMANDU: A total of 1,399 bodies have been recovered and 4,089 people remain missing following the flash flood that struck the Rasuwa-Trishuli river system on August 26, according to Nepal Police Headquarters.

Central Police Spokesperson and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Abinarayan Kafle, stated that the retrieved remains consist of 544 males, 336 females and 519 partial human remains. The official missing persons list includes 2,907 males, 572 females, 272 foreign males and 328 foreign females, while a total of 9,287 injured people have been safely rescued.

Authorities have so far safely inhumed 1,230 bodies after completing DNA profiling to secure evidence for future identification. A force of 7,975 police personnel has been mobilised across affected areas to conduct search-and-rescue operations, distribute humanitarian assistance and manage dead bodies.

Emergency shelters established in various districts are currently providing refuge to 3,440 disaster survivors. Meanwhile, eight people who suffered flood-related injuries remain under care at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) Maharajgunj.

TUTH Spokesperson and senior neurosurgeon Dr Gopal Sedain identified the patients undergoing treatment as Meen Bahadur Shrestha, Pabitra Karki, Pema Tamang, Rajendra Bhatta, Tej Bahadur Tamang, Maheshwor Shah, Nima Dorje Tamang and Chandika Shrestha. A further 69 injured survivors brought to the facility following their rescue had returned home as of Tuesday morning.
