Swostishree Gurukul hosts US diplomat Mike Harker for 'Everest talks'

KATHMANDU: Swostishree Gurukul IB Continuum School on Thursday hosted 'Everest Talks' session for its students, featuring Mike Harker, Public Affairs Chief at the US Embassy in Nepal.

The gathering offered students an opportunity to learn about Harker's personal journey, life lessons, and his successful ascent of Mount Everest. The programme was organised to encourage pupils to dream beyond limitations, view challenges as opportunities, and develop the determination, courage, discipline, and perseverance required to pursue their goals.

The presentation connected with the school's Middle Years Programme (MYP) IV curriculum topic on National Personalities, in which students study the lives, contributions, struggles, and character traits of prominent individuals. Relating classroom learning to real-world experience, Harker shared details of his climb to the summit and reflected on the experiences that shaped his journey.

Detailing the preparation, uncertainties, and lessons of his expedition, Harker stated that major achievements rely on determination, courage, discipline, patience, teamwork, resilience, and the willingness to move forward under difficult conditions, rather than talent alone.

Harker also shared a philosophical reflection on standing before the Himalayas, explaining how the scale and grandeur of the range can make individuals recognise their own insignificance relative to the vastness of the Earth. He contrasted this feeling with being the centre of attention in places such as Kathmandu and California, where he grew up. He further highlighted the power of association—the people, experiences, and connections that shape aspirations—and how this sense of connection ultimately motivated his decision to scale Everest.

His reflections prompted students to consider their own goals and to recognise that reaching personal summits requires preparation, purpose, perseverance, and courage. During an interactive session, students asked questions and discussed the realities of mountaineering.

School Principal Neha KC moderated the session, while high school students Sparsha Pradhan and Agrata Bista delivered the welcome address and introduced the guest speaker. The event concluded with School Managing Director Mina Maharjan and the principal presenting a token of appreciation to Harker.
