KATHMANDU: Former president of Federation of Computer Association Nepal (CAN Federation) Nawaraj Kunwar has been unanimously re-elected as the vice chairman of Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organisation (ASOCIO) for the 2027-2028 term.
The election took place during the 42nd annual general meeting and convention of ASOCIO, which recently concluded in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Upon his re-election, Kunwar stated that his efforts to establish Nepal on the international stage had received a further boost.
"I have been making efforts to establish Nepal on the international stage within the information technology sector," Kunwar said. He added that building a robust technology system in Asian countries through ASOCIO could establish Nepal in the global information and communication technology sector. "This will open up new opportunities for innovation, growth, and international cooperation. Furthermore, I believe this will also help to bridge the gap between developing and underdeveloped countries in Asia," he said.
Meanwhile, CAN Federation General Secretary Chandra Bilash Bhurtel extended his congratulations, expressing confidence that Kunwar would continue to make a notable contribution in the upcoming term to the benefit of Nepal. Bhurtel stated that the environment for a unanimous election was created because a significant role was played under Kunwar's leadership in introducing the Nepali IT sector and institutions to the world.
"We believe that Kunwar's representation in ASOCIO will aid the CAN Federation's efforts to ensure everyone's access to changing technology and the digital economy, and to build a prosperous Nepal through information and communication technology," Bhurtel said.
Representing the CAN Federation, Kunwar has served as vice chairman of ASOCIO since 2022, fulfilling the responsibility for the 2022-2024 and 2025-2026 terms.
ASOCIO's new executive committee, under the continued leadership of Chairman Stan Singh-Jit of Malaysia, representing PIKOM, includes newly elected representatives of technology organisations from Nepal, Malaysia, Thailand, Macau, Myanmar, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore, and the Philippines.
