KATHMANDU: The Banking Finance and Insurance Institute of Nepal (BFIN), in collaboration with Nepal Microfinance Bankers’ Association (NMBA), is organising the 3rd BFIN Annual Microfinance Conference 2026 on Friday in Lalitpur.

The event will gather board leaders, senior executives, regulators and industry professionals to deliberate on critical issues shaping Nepal’s microfinance sector.

The conference is being held at a pivotal juncture as microfinance institutions (MFIs) face the challenge of balancing social empowerment and financial inclusion with institutional viability, asset quality, regulatory expectations and operational modernisation.

A key highlight is a special session on lessons from Bangladesh, featuring A K M Sazzad Hossain, Deputy Managing Director of Grameen Bank. The session will review Bangladesh’s four-decade experience, women-led entrepreneurship, and its evolution from microcredit towards broader financial inclusion to identify elements applicable to Nepal.

Dedicated sessions, including 'State of Nepalese Microfinance: Assessing the Present, Policy & The Way Forward', will evaluate business model viability, operating efficiency, regulatory architecture, and diversification into rural enterprise development, affordable housing and micro-insurance.

A session titled 'Reviving Strength & Envisioning the Future of MFIs in Nepal' will focus on balance-sheet recovery, loan restructuring, client protection, credit discipline and over-indebtedness. Discussions will also address digitalisation, artificial intelligence adoption and next-generation products such as remittance-backed credit, climate finance and education finance.

Additionally, a special session will address cyber-enabled fraud in banks and financial institutions (BFIs) and the institutional preparedness required to counter technology-enabled financial crime.

Bringing together representatives from Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau, and international experts, BFIN and NMBA aim to promote meaningful dialogue to establish a resilient, responsible and technology-enabled sector.
