MUSTANG: A total of 543 tonnes of fruit have been imported from China through Korala border crossings over the past 11 days, the Quarantine Office at Nhechung in Lomanthang Rural Municipality-4 of Mustang district said.

Bandana Ghartimagar, a technical assistant at the Quarantine Office, said, "The imports included 87.3 tonnes of apples, 16.1 tonnes of mangoes and 8.316 tonnes of dragon fruit." The influx followed heavy rain and snowfall in the area.

The Beni–Jomsom–Korala road has been completely blocked since September 27 because of adverse weather, making it difficult to move the consignments to their final destinations. Officials and traders have expressed concern that prolonged delays in containers could lead to spoilage.

Some dragon fruit from one container was distributed to residents in Jomsom on Thursday. Subas Sunuwar, a company representative, said, "The dragon fruit, valued at about Rs 2.4 million, was saved from rotting."

He added that the transport delay has caused an estimated loss of Rs 3 million.
