KATHMANDU: Mercure Kathmandu Sukedhara Heights has become the first hotel in Nepal to earn Green Key certification, an internationally recognised eco-label for sustainable tourism. The certification highlights the hotel’s commitment to responsible hospitality in the country.

The milestone was celebrated at a special event attended by French Ambassador to Nepal Francoise Puig-Inza, Chairman Desh Bandhu Basnet, General Manager Abhishek Pasricha and hotel staff.

“I warmly congratulate Mercure Kathmandu Sukedhara Heights on receiving the Green Key certification. This achievement reflects a genuine commitment to sustainable hospitality, and I hope it will inspire many more establishments in Nepal to follow. I congratulate the entire Mercure Kathmandu team on this milestone,” said Puig-Inza.

General Manager of Mercure Kathmandu Sukedhara Heights Abhishek Pasricha said, “It is an honour to receive the Green Key certification and a proud moment for our entire team to be recognised as the first hotel in Nepal to achieve this distinction. This is not the end of our journey but the beginning. We remain committed to continually improving and taking our sustainability efforts to new heights.”

The Kathmandu property received the certification following an independent assessment across 13 areas of sustainability, including energy and water efficiency, waste reduction, responsible food sourcing, staff training and community engagement.

Operated by the Foundation for Environmental Education, the Green Key programme recognises tourism businesses that meet strict environmental management and sustainable operational standards. The certification provides a practical framework for integrating sustainable practices into daily operations and applying international standards to meet Kathmandu’s local environmental needs. As Green Key certification must be renewed annually, the hotel is required to continually improve and raise its standards.

By achieving the certification, the hotel has joined a global network of certified establishments spanning more than 80 countries. The property remains committed to continually improving its environmental practices while providing meaningful experiences for guests, colleagues and the wider community.
