KATHMANDU: Work to upgrade the Matatirtha–Syuchatar 132‑kV transmission line is under way and could disrupt power in the Kathmandu Valley on Saturday and Sunday.
The secretariat of the Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, said electricity supply in the valley could be affected while old wires and conductors are replaced with new, high‑capacity cables.
The upgrade is being carried out by the Nepal Electricity Authority’s Project Management Directorate. The authority is replacing the old conductors on the Matatirtha–Syuchatar 132‑kV double‑circuit transmission line with HTLS conductors, which can carry higher power loads.
To allow the work to proceed, the transmission line will be shut down from 09:00 to 17:00 on both days. Nearly 400 metres of conductor on one circuit of the double‑circuit line requires replacement.
Areas served by the Matatirtha and Syuchatar substations are expected to experience power disruption during the installation of the new conductors. With the new conductors in place, the power system is expected to be more reliable and capable of handling greater loads.
