Cyclone Arnab brings rain, snowfall across much of Nepal

KATHMANDU: Weather conditions will remain generally cloudy across Nepal today, with light rain occurring in some hilly areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces and in parts of the Tarai and Madhesh, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. The Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall and snowfall in some areas over the next two days as Cyclone Arnab continues to affect the country's weather.

Most parts of the country may receive moderate rain and snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the next two days, the Department said. Some locations in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces could record heavy rainfall, while one or two places may experience very heavy rain and snowfall. Heavy rain and snowfall are also likely in some hilly and mountainous parts of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces.

The Department has urged farmers not to carry out agricultural activities, including rice harvesting, today and tomorrow due to the expected rainfall. It has also advised caution in high hilly and mountainous areas because of the risk of heavy snowfall, snowstorms and landslides, and requested tourists to avoid travelling to high-altitude regions.

Tourists already in such areas have been advised to remain in safe locations until weather conditions improve. The Department warned that rainfall may lead to colder temperatures, landslides in vulnerable areas and along roads, and disruptions to road transport, air services and daily life.

This afternoon, moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at several locations in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini, as well as in most hilly areas of Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces. Snowfall is also expected in higher hilly and mountainous regions. Strong winds may occur in parts of the Terai districts of Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.

Weather conditions are expected to remain generally cloudy tonight, with moderate rain and snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning forecast in many places. Some areas could experience heavy rain and snowfall.
