KATHMANDU: Hindus across Nepal are celebrating Dhanteras today, marking the start of the five-day Tihar festival. Considered an auspicious day for new purchases, Dhanteras sees many people buying gold, silver, jewellery, utensils and household goods, with the belief that such acquisitions symbolise prosperity and good fortune.

Also known as Dhantrayodashi, the festival is associated with Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera and Lord Dhanvantari. Devotees offer prayers and perform rituals, seeking blessings for wealth, health and family well-being.

Markets and jewellery shops have seen a rise in customer footfall as families prepare for the country's second-largest festival. Traditional shopping remains one of the most visible aspects of Dhanteras, which is observed on the Trayodashi tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu lunar calendar.

The Tihar celebrations will continue over the coming days with rituals dedicated to crows, dogs, cows, Goddess Lakshmi, oxen and brothers, reflecting the festival's diverse cultural and religious traditions.
