Top Mechanics Who Should Be On Your Speed Dial
Anyone who owns a vehicle knows that a trip to the service center or a workshop is inevitable. Kathmandu has auto mechanics and service stations in almost every corner. Finding an authorised service station or an auto mechanic in the city is not a difficult job; however, finding a really good one that ticks all the boxes is easier said than done.
The Importance of a Mechanic
An auto mechanic plays an integral role for the proper functioning and the smooth operation of your vehicle. In layman’s term, auto mechanics work with vehicle’s parts and systems; they help inspect and accurately diagnose the problem and help with the maintenance and the reparation of the vehicles.
Ashish Sinha, Founder and Technician of Iron Monks theorises, “Would you simply trust someone on the side of a road with a scalpel and stethoscope claiming to be a doctor? You wouldn’t let them diagnosis you, would you? The same is with machines. So, that’s why it is extremely important for people working on these machines to be trained personnel.”
That being said, quality and safety are the most important aspects when it comes to auto repair and maintenance. Negligence in auto repair will increase the risk of the vehicle breaking down in precarious situations and moreover the driver’s and the passenger’s safety might be compromised as well.
How to find a good mechanic?
Having a good mechanic can save a person tremendous amount of stress and it can be easier on the wallet as well. Shashank Shah, an entrepreneur and an avid automobile enthusiast, claims, “The best mechanics are not found on a given day when you require something to be fixed; they are acquired based on the long term relationships that you develop over the years”. Normally, once you start repairing your car with a particular mechanic or a service station, they get familiar with your vehicle. As a result, the same mechanic can work on the vehicle with ease and familiarity in the future.
With the growth in auto dealership and workshops in the country, the offered skills and services have increased significantly. “So, it is difficult to classify the best mechanics because it really depends on what you are looking for to get fixed,”says Shah. For example, if a vehicle owner needs to fix his or her brakes and transmission, an authorised service station is recommended. On the other hand, if the vehicle owner, specifically, needs to fix a dent, an independent mechanic who specialises in denting and painting would cost less and he would be more suitable for the task.
Things to Consider When Looking for a Good Mechanic
The best time to find an auto mechanic is before anything major happens. But, more often than not, such is not the case. In addition, identifying a mechanic who you can trust with your car or bike takes more than just a quick drop off and pick up. There is not a singular identifying factor as to what makes up a good mechanic or service station; but it’s important to keep in mind a few things listed below:
Even if some of the Nepali mechanics and auto service centers are slowly moving to the digital platform, word-of-mouth and referral from a friend or a family member is still the best option. In a city like Kathmandu it is always better to ask around, the primitive way. It is better to talk with friends and family for word-of-mouth referral. Best case scenario, a friend and family member who might have already experienced a similar auto issue would be able to point you towards the right direction.
“A customer’s strongest option right now is to go to a shop for which you received some kind of word-of-mouth assurance,” stresses Sinha.
“Most people tend to neglect the anatomy of a bike or a car and lack the idea of how it functions. Based on that lack of knowledge, mechanics might claim to fix or change parts that don’t need to be changed,” reveals Sinha. This lack of knowledge about automobiles and the lack of knowledge about the correct price works in favour of the mechanic as there have been several incidents when the price is misquoted.
One needs to keep in mind that if the price seems too low, the service quality will be the same as well. On the other hand, a very expensive mechanic is unnecessary as you could get similar service for much less. It is always better to look for quality and service that the vehicle requires but is also affordable.
“Giving your verdict on a good mechanic is a rather difficult thing to do. But in order to judge a good mechanic, it has to be based on the end result,” states Sinha. Many would agree that a good mechanic is not somebody you would want to visit every fortnight. A sign of a good mechanic is when you don’t have to see him for months until the next scheduled visit.
Eventually, many auto experts believe that the best way to save money is to choose a decent quality mechanic or a workshop and give them the freedom to do all the necessary maintenance and repair work. In the long run, this generally helps prevent breakdowns and often saves money by allowing the driver to make minor repairs now and then instead of a major one in the future.
