KATHMANDU: Members of the National Assembly (NA) have called for the effective implementation of the newly unveiled government policies and programmes for the fiscal year 2025/26.

During the NA meeting on Monday, parliamentarians pushed for this while deliberating on the incumbent government's annual policies and programmes, which were presented by President Ramchandra Paudel before the joint session of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly on May 2.

Narayan Dutta Bhatta expressed the view that the policies and programmes had incorporated all key aspects, while Rajendra Laxmi Gaire praised the government's commitment to ensuring access to clean drinking water for all by the next fiscal year.

Similarly, Rukmini Koirala commended the proposed policies aimed at eliminating violence against women and raising international awareness about the adverse impacts of climate change-induced challenges and disasters on people and mountain regions.

Jhakku Prasad Subedi, however, criticised the policies and programmes, stating that they failed to include measures aimed at achieving socialism-oriented socio-economic transformation. He further argued that the newly presented policies and programmes do not meet the aspirations of Nepali citizens.

Narayan Dutta Mishra underscored the importance of effectively implementing policies to drive economic growth and combat corruption. He also called for the government to ensure farmers receive fair prices for their produce.

Additionally, Radheshyam Paswan stressed the need for effective enforcement of positive policies on agriculture, health, tourism, drinking water and youth affairs.

Bishnudevi Pudasaini welcomed the policies promoting entrepreneurship, employment, agricultural production and improvements in education quality. She also acknowledged the clarity in outlining common programmes across all three levels of government.

Other parliamentarians, including Renu Chand, Bishnu Kumari Sapkota, Padam Bahadur Pariyar, Maya Prasad Sharma and Tulasa Kumari Dahal, also expressed their views on the policies and programmes.

As deliberations on the newly presented policies and programmes continue in the Upper House, NA Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal announced that the NA will reconvene on Tuesday at 12:15 pm for further discussions.
