KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) organised a programme on Monday to celebrate 25 years of general surgery.

At the event, head of the Surgery Department, Dr Suman Kumar Shrestha, felicitated KMC’s second head of surgery department, Dr Lok Bikram Thapa, pioneer and legend of Nepali surgery; Dr Sunil Kumar Sharma Dhakal, head of the Department of General and Digestive Diseases at Nepal Mediciti; and Dr Deepak Raj Singh, who introduced ultrasound procedures in intra-operative surgery at the Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital (KMCTH). These stalwarts have set the standard of surgery in Nepal.

Dr Singh also addressed the gathering with optimism about the advancements being made in surgical procedures.

Dr Roshan Ghimire, HPB and liver transplant surgeon and associate professor at KMC, presented “Operative Management of Paediatric Liver Transplant” and unveiled the logistics behind operating live liver transplants domestically in the coming months. Additionally, Dr Sujan Regmee highlighted key moments from the last 25 years of KMC in his presentation titled “The KMCTH Surgical Journey: Educate, Innovate, Elevate.”

To conclude the event, Dr Romi Dahal, associate professor, spoke of ongoing infrastructure developments and facility improvements at KMC.

The immediate past head of the Surgery Department, Dr Prabin Bikram Thapa, explained that due to ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, international doctors and guests trained at KMC could not be present at the event.

Established in 1997, KMC has trained doctors and served the Nepali population as a private entity since 2000.
