KATHMANDU: The Asian Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs (AIDIA) founder, Sunil KC, has urged COP29 Presidency and Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues, Mukhtar Babayev, to invest in hydropower in Nepal.

During a meeting with the visiting delegation from Azerbaijan, led by Babayev, AIDIA founder KC also proposed increasing bilateral economic relations to benefit both countries.

The discussions also explored the possibility of direct fertiliser imports from Azerbaijan, as Nepal relies heavily on imported fertiliser to support its agrarian economy.

KC, highlighting Nepal’s advancements in green energy, encouraged the visiting dignitary to host Nepali hydro experts and facilitate knowledge exchange. "Azerbaijan is planning to source 30% of its electricity needs from renewable sources, including hydro, solar and wind power, by 2030, and Nepal’s expertise could be beneficial to Azerbaijan," Babayev said in response.

Babayev also outlined Azerbaijan’s policy to promote clean energy as a national agenda and transition towards greener energy. "The foundation of all relations is a strong business connection," Babayev said, adding, "The more business and economic ties there are, the stronger the bilateral relations become. I am pleased to meet members of the private sector and business community, in addition to government officials."

During the meeting, held on the sidelines of Sagarmatha Sambaad, the flagship event hosted by the Government of Nepal, the parties discussed various opportunities for business and trade engagement between Nepal and Azerbaijan, along with potential future collaboration with AIDIA. "They also discussed the significant possibilities for cooperation between Nepal and Azerbaijan in areas such as energy infrastructure, hydropower, and tourism promotion," a press statement issued by AIDIA stated.

Babayev is in Nepal as a keynote speaker at the first edition of Sagarmatha Sambaad. He delivered his keynote speech during the inaugural session, which was officiated by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in Kathmandu, on Friday.
