KATHMANDU: Officials of the Land Issue Resolving Commission have apprised Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli of the progress of the commission's work so far.
During a discussion at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar, Kathmandu, today, commission officials reported that the commission is working in collaboration with all three tiers of government to identify landless Dalits, squatters and unregistered inhabitants; to collect land records; and to carry out certification, surveying, dispute resolution, as well as land registration and the distribution of land ownership certificates.
Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Balaram Adhikari was also present at the meeting.
Chairperson of the commission Hari Prasad Rijal informed that a standard has been prepared to identify those who have been landless and those squatters who have not received housing or government land over the past 10 years, as well as those who have been living on government, public and leasehold land for at least 10 years without proper arrangements.
Commission officials mentioned that it will be easier for the commission to pursue its work if the bill to amend certain land-related laws in Nepal is passed.
PM Oli expressed confidence that the bill under consideration in Parliament will be passed soon and instructed the commission to proceed with identifying landless Dalits, squatters and unregulated settlers in a planned and accelerated manner.
The government has announced in its annual budget for fiscal year 2025/26 that land ownership certificates will be provided to 500,000 families within the coming fiscal year.
The government formed the commission on October 30 last year.
