KATHMANDU: Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President Chandra Prasad Dhakal has urged the government to allow a one-off import of vehicles that fall below the Euro 6 emissions standard.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the NADA Auto Show 2025 at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu—organised by the NADA Automobiles Association of Nepal— FNCCI President Dhakal said that while the Euro 6 standard is welcome, its immediate enforcement could present difficulties and that a one-off exemption should be granted.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli described the request as positive and confirmed that the government would consider it. He added that policy-based systems and modernisation infrastructure have been established and that there will be no governmental obstruction to investment or enterprise.

At the show, Dhakal praised the event’s contribution to Nepal’s economy, noting that exhibitions such as this help to connect markets with customers. He highlighted a recent rise in electric vehicle imports and identified potential for vehicle-assembly industries, data centres and environmentally friendly production in Nepal.

He also noted that the government has revised more than 30 laws related to industry, investment and business, signalling a favourable stance towards the private sector. ‘Although Nepal has faced a challenging economic situation in recent years, there are now signs of improvement: vehicle sales are estimated to have risen by about 40% compared with two years ago, reflecting growing market confidence. Similarly, loan disbursement has increased by 8.7% and bank profits have also grown,’ he said.

Dhakal further announced the establishment of the Nepal Development Company, with an initial capital of Rs 10 billion, to create investment opportunities in infrastructure, energy, tourism and other productive sectors. He said the company could invest in large projects of up to Rs 40 billion.

Recalling FNCCI-led business conferences in India, China and Dubai designed to attract foreign investment, he said that international interest in Nepal remains strong. He added that, once the newly enacted laws and agreements are implemented, foreign investment is expected to become even easier.
