KATHMANDU: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said he is closely following the situation in Nepal and is deeply saddened by the loss of life during recent protests.

In a statement shared via social media platform X today, Guterres urged all parties to act with restraint to prevent further escalation of violence.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life. I urge a thorough investigation, restraint to avoid further escalation of violence, and dialogue towards forging a constructive path forward,” he said.

He also emphasised the importance of respecting human rights and upholding the rule of law, calling on authorities to ensure compliance with human rights law.

He further stressed that protests must take place peacefully, with full respect for life and property.

His remarks come amid growing concerns over adverse developments following Gen Z demonstrations held on Monday and Tuesday (September 8 and 9).
