KATHMANDU: Gen Z protesters have expressed a preference for former chief justice Sushila Karki (73) to serve as interim prime minister, according to a Reuters report.
The young agitators want former chief justice Sushila Karki as the interim prime minister, Raman Kumar Karna, Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, told Reuters on Wednesday. The group will meet the army chief with the proposal, said Karna, who was consulted by the protesters.
Although the movement’s participants have set the age limit for involvement at 28, Karki’s perceived independence from partisan politics and her constitutional expertise have resonated with the coalition, it added.
Karki, Nepal’s first female chief justice, was appointed eight years ago and has maintained a non-partisan stance. While her husband, Durga Prasad Subedi, once led the Nepali Congress youth wing, she has no formal party affiliation.
No official response has yet been received from Sushila Karki, President Ramchandra Paudel or any major political party. Protest leaders say they plan to formalise their recommendation through an open letter.
